Peer Mediation Training Programs

Community Mediation Services' peer mediation training for middle and high school students is an empowering initiative designed to equip youth with essential conflict resolution skills. The training focuses on enhancing problem-solving and communication abilities while fostering empathy and understanding among peers. Peer mediators play a critical role in de-escalating aggression and violence, promoting cooperation and peaceful conflict resolution in schools and communities.

By taking an active role in resolving disputes, student facilitators not only help their peers reach mutually acceptable solutions but also contribute to a more respectful and harmonious environment. The program benefits not only the school climate by reducing the need for traditional disciplinary measures but also the peer mediators, who gain valuable leadership, empathy, and conflict resolution skills.

We have trained students in partnership with Clark County Juvenile Justice, the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Washington, Bike Clark County, and other organizations. In these settings, youth are trained in general conflict resolution strategies to better navigate disagreements in their own lives. These more generalized trainings use the same principles as our peer mediation programs.

Community Gun Violence Reduction

G.U.I.D.E. is a dedicated initiative aimed at addressing ways to prevent and intervene in youth violence within our community. Led by CMS, G.U.I.D.E. seeks to diagnose and address the root causes of youth violence. Selected by the Washington State Department of Commerce, CMS has assembled an advisory team to build on previous advisory board work from 2022-2023, using insights gained to better serve our community. You can read the work of the previous Healthy Youth Violence Intervention and Prevention advisory board here.
